Leaving home can be very difficult, costly and daunting, but its something the majority of our students, based in rural and regional areas, have to do.
We pride ourselves on not just providing financial support to our students, but also emotional support and advice to help them thrive. ๐ช

When tricky_vicky_ came to me last year and said she wanted to do something to honour the legacy of beautiful Jess, we had no idea how special it would turn out to be. Over the course of the next few weeks, between kids, work and general life we went back and forth on what it might look likeโฆ Do we want to raise funds for mental health or simply start a conversation? Do we want to partner with someone? Do we want to do a large event or a smaller, more intimate one? What would our call to action be?
Through her work as a mental health nurse over the last 15 years, Tor had identified the significant challenges facing rural communities - and as an area close to both our hearts, it felt like the right fit.
These communities face two major issues when it comes to mental health - access to services, and access to education. There are lots of brilliant organisations tackling the access issue; we felt that education was an area where we could assist.
It can be tough to know what to do when someone you love is facing mental health challenges. How to recognise it, how to respond to it, when to ask for help. Itโs often the family, friends, colleagues who become the crucial โfirst respondersโ, but they do not have the tools or resources they need.
ewenwilliam had completed the mhfa_australia course online himself when we had Alfie, so he would be able to support him through anything he may face as he grew up.
So our thought was this: letโs help educate the community with a simple online mental health course (psychologist recommended) thatโs super practical, not too overwhelming and doesnโt take too long. Something that people will actually do.
Through #HandtotheLand we are raising funds on behalf of the countryeducationfoundation, which both of our Mums have been involved in for many years, to educate people through the mhfa_australia online course and a number of mental health scholarships in memory of Jess. Our goal is to improve the mental health literacy of rural and regional Australians.

It`s already the second quarter of 2024, and we know many of our students have started their first year of university, VET studies, apprenticeships or traineeships!
We have a FREE online resource called `Make it Possible`- a `one-stop-shop` to inform and inspire post-school options and everything young students need to survive and thrive as a student and adult. ๐ป
The `Get It Done` section contains information about how to be successful after school no matter what paths our students take. It includes advice on things like managing the basics of being an adult, finances and health. ๐ฃ๏ธ
And of course, the resource contains EVEN MORE helpful hints, tips and advice from our amazing CEF students and alumni! The resource supports ALL post-school endeavours, including VET sector education and training.

They had no idea who we were or what we did until they came across us on Google, but still chose us as their charity partner because of the clear impact we have on regional students. ๐ช

Our alumna, Kelly Easey from Gunnedah, has come a long way since receiving grant and scholarship funding from CEF in 2014 and 2015. ๐ฃ๏ธ
From the tiny locality of Willala, near Gunnedah, NSW, she became the first member of her family to attend university. Having completed her studies in Medicine in 2019 at @unsw, she now has dreams to returning to a regional area as a cardiologist. ๐ฉบ
